Cambridge Atomworks tests truck-sized ODIN micro-reactor
Cambridge Atomworks is currently testing the ODIN micro-reactor, a compact nuclear technology designed to fit within a truck container. Unlike traditional large-scale nuclear plants, this system utilizes molten salt instead of high-pressure water for cooling and relies on air for heat dissipation.
Engineers at the Granta Park facilities in Cambridge are conducting non-nuclear testing phases. These tests involve heating salt to observe its flow and chemical reactions with various metals to validate the design. The technology aims to provide a silent, low-maintenance power source for remote locations, such as scientific bases or mining communities, that lack access to traditional electrical grids or gas pipelines.
