Cambridgeshire authorities review e-scooter safety

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority is reviewing the safety and social impact of its e-bike and e-scooter trial. The current contract with provider Voi, which began in 2020, has been extended until May 2028.

Local councillors have raised several concerns regarding the trial, including reports of increased head injuries among children following scooter accidents. Councillor Anna Bradnam of South Cambs District Council noted that organizations dealing with brain injuries, such as Headway and local children’s hospices, have observed an increase in such cases, often attributed to riders not wearing helmets.

Additional criticisms involve the management of the vehicles, with officials citing issues such as e-scooters blocking pavements and cluttering public spaces. Councillor Hugh Clough of Cambridge City Council also noted a lack of consultation regarding the placement of designated drop-off points, while other representatives criticized the provider's responsiveness to public and official concerns.
