Cambridgeshire councils report high food waste recycling rates
Local councils in Cambridgeshire and Fenland are reporting significant success following the introduction of new food waste recycling services.
In East Cambridgeshire, the district council announced that residents recycled nearly 1,000 tonnes of food waste within the first 11 weeks of the service. This initiative has led to a nearly 40 per cent reduction in household rubbish requiring disposal. The collected waste is processed via anaerobic digestion to generate renewable energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Similarly, Fenland District Council reported that residents collected 44 tonnes of food waste in a single week during the initial phase of its new weekly service. This rollout, funded by the government to comply with national legislation, aims to convert waste into energy and nutrient-rich fertiliser for farming. The council plans to extend the scheme to town centre flats and communal properties later this winter.
