Cambridgeshire reports high childhood obesity rates in deprived areas
Cambridgeshire County Council's Adults and Health Committee met on September 17 to address ongoing obesity challenges within the region. Data from the 2024/25 National Child Measurement Programme indicates that 7.7 per cent of children in Reception and 17.2 per cent of Year 6 children in Cambridgeshire are living with obesity.
Significant health inequalities were noted, with obesity rates reaching 28 per cent among Year 6 children in the most deprived areas, compared to 13.2 per cent in the least deprived areas. Additionally, obesity rates in Fenland remain above average.
The council is implementing its Strategic Obesity Framework in collaboration with NHS organizations, schools, and community groups to improve access to healthy food and increase physical activity. The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Obesity Charter also aims to normalize healthy weight across the region.
