Cambrils to replace underground waste containers with surface models
The Cambrils City Council has announced plans to phase out all underground waste container areas in favor of approximately 1,500 surface-level containers. Enrique Arce, the Councilor for General Services, stated that the current underground system does not comply with current regulations and would require prohibitively expensive drainage adaptations to remain viable.
In addition to regulatory issues, the council noted that the existing system is costly to maintain, prone to breakdowns, and requires expensive specialized trucks. The transition to lateral loading surface containers is intended to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs. The project involves an investment of approximately 1.5 million euros, funded by the municipality's treasury surplus. The new containers will be owned by the City Council and provided to the current concessionaire, Secomsa.
