Camera prices rise due to AI memory demand and used market trends

Digital camera prices are facing upward pressure due to rising component costs and shifting market trends. Major manufacturers, including Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm, have informed investors that the increasing cost of memory components presents a significant business challenge. This rise is linked to the high demand for digital storage driven by generative AI, which requires massive data center capacity. Consequently, brands may implement pricing adjustments to compensate for these costs, affecting both external memory cards and the internal chips required for image processing.

Simultaneously, the used camera market is defying traditional depreciation trends. Data from the Japanese marketplace Minna Camera indicates that certain older digital models are increasing in value. For instance, the Nikon D5600 saw a price increase of over 24 percent in the first half of 2026. While newer models show minimal price changes, cameras released before 2016 have seen an average price increase of 7.1 percent, signaling a growing demand for older digital equipment.
