Camerino Hospital Starts Osteoporosis Screening for Elderly at Casa Amica
The Internal Medicine Department of the Hospital of Camerino, led by Dr. Annamaria Schimizzi, began a structured screening program for residents of the protected home "Casa Amica". The initiative aims to identify early risk factors such as malnutrition and osteoporosis that increase the likelihood of falls, fractures and hospital admissions among frail older adults.
Screening uses internationally validated tools, laboratory tests and anthropometric measurements. Based on results, personalized care plans are created, potentially including nutritional interventions, adapted physical‑activity programs, fall‑prevention strategies and pharmacological treatment. Ongoing monitoring will be performed through periodic checks and tele‑visits. General practitioners are actively involved, with screening outcomes shared with family doctors to ensure coordinated follow‑up.
Hospital director Alessandro Marini highlighted the project as a model of proactive medicine, while Casa Amica Foundation president Angelo Montaruli noted that, once completed, the program could be replicated in other elderly facilities across the province of Macerata and the Marche region.
