British Columbia criminal justice updates: prison transfer and manslaughter plea

Cameron Moffat, one of the men convicted of the 2010 murder of Kimberly Proctor, has been transferred to a minimum-security facility in Mission, British Columbia. The decision, approved by a correctional warden, has drawn criticism from Proctor’s family. Her aunt, Jo-Anne Landolt, expressed shock at the move, stating that the transfer feels like a “stepping stone” toward eventual release and questioning why the decision was not subject to a multi-person review similar to a parole hearing.

In a separate legal matter in British Columbia, a youth has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with the 2021 death of 22-year-old Taig Savage. Savage was found unresponsive on a track at Penticton Secondary School. While the youth entered a guilty plea in Kelowna Supreme Court, other individuals involved in the case face ongoing legal proceedings, including a trial for Issac Hayes Jack scheduled for 2027. The family of the deceased has expressed frustration regarding communication from the justice system.
