Cameroon pursues investment and IMF support amid fiscal risks

Cameroon is actively pursuing economic stabilization and investment through various international channels. In London, a delegation led by Finance Minister Louis Paul Motaze conducted a market sounding event with the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council to present the nation's economic fundamentals and large-scale projects in energy, transport, and infrastructure.

Simultaneously, the government is working to strengthen private sector support. The Minister of Economy, Alamine Ousmane Mey, met with the new Director of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for Central Africa and Nigeria, Olivier Buyoya, to discuss enhancing financing and investment instruments for Cameroonian businesses.

However, fiscal challenges remain. The 2027 budget relies heavily on 300 billion FCFA expected from a new IMF program to cover nearly 30% of the projected 1,018 billion FCFA deficit. Negotiations with the IMF are ongoing, and Moody's has maintained a Caa1 credit rating for the country, signaling high credit risk.
