Cameroon awaits government reshuffle following President Biya's return

President Paul Biya, 93, has returned to Cameroon following a 10-week absence abroad, but a promised government reshuffle has yet to occur. Despite Biya's December 2025 pledge to form a new government ‘in the coming days’, no new appointments had been made as of October 6.

Concerns regarding political succession have intensified following a constitutional amendment promulgated on April 14. This reform restored the vice presidency, a position previously abolished in 1972. Under the new law, the president holds the authority to appoint and dismiss a vice president, who is designated to serve the remainder of a seven-year term and assume interim presidency if the office becomes vacant due to death, resignation, or permanent incapacity.

Currently, the vice presidency remains vacant, and the amendment provides no specific deadline for filling the post.
