Cameroon calls for equitable refugee burden-sharing in Geneva
At the 77th session of the UNHCR Executive Committee in Geneva, Cameroon has called for an equitable sharing of the humanitarian burden and increased international financial support. Representing President Paul Biya, Minister of Territorial Administration Paul Atanga Nji highlighted the strain placed on the nation's finances and public infrastructure by the presence of approximately 500,000 refugees and 20,000 asylum seekers, primarily from neighboring countries.
The Minister warned that global humanitarian funding is experiencing a significant decline, which complicates the ability of host nations to provide essential services and protection. Cameroon is advocating for more predictable and effective financial mobilization in line with the Global Compact on Refugees. Additionally, the government reaffirmed its commitment to the safe and dignified voluntary return of displaced persons to their countries of origin once security conditions allow.
