Cameroon defends human rights record before UN Committee in Geneva
A Cameroonian delegation, led by its permanent representative to the United Nations, appeared before the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva on October 22, 2026. The session focused on the implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
UN experts raised several critical concerns, including the security situation in the North-West, South-West, and Far-North regions, arbitrary detentions, and the treatment of sexual minorities. Specific attention was given to the assassination of journalist Martinez Zogo and the practice of trying civilians in military courts.
The Cameroonian delegation defended the nation's legal framework, asserting that robust institutional and legislative structures exist to protect fundamental rights. However, officials acknowledged potential discrepancies between existing laws and their practical application on the ground. Regarding military jurisdiction, the delegation maintained that such proceedings are legal when offenses involve defense forces or the use of firearms.
