Cameroon faces rising femicide as leaders demand legislative action
Cameroon is facing a surge in femicide and gender-based violence, prompting urgent calls from activists and political leaders for legislative action and state intervention.
Philanthropist Delly Singah has criticized the government, specifically Territorial Administration Minister Paul Atanga Nji, arguing that verbal condemnations are insufficient. The NGO Ligue pour l’éducation de la femme et de l’enfant (Lefe) has described the situation as a national crime. The organization reported 1,599 cases of gender-based violence, including 166 rapes, between January and April 2026. Lefe is advocating for new laws to address femicide and provide protective measures for victims.
On the political front, Joshua Osih, president of the Social Democratic Front (SDF), has called for strong legislative responses. Osih stated that the SDF has submitted proposals to the National Assembly to combat femicide and infanticide, but claimed the ruling RDPC majority has failed to examine these texts. He urged citizens to engage in the electoral process to drive systemic change.
