Cameroon: Journalist and Opposition Leader Detained

Human rights concerns have emerged in Cameroon following the prolonged detentions of journalist Emmanuel Mbombog Mbog Matip and opposition leader Parfait Mbvoum.

Emmanuel Mbombog Mbog Matip, the publication director of ‘Climat Social’, has been held at the Bertoua Central Prison since June 9, 2026. Despite holding a state-recognized national disability card for a 65% motor impairment and suffering from critical chronic health issues, his legal status remains irregular. His defense claims he was detained based on a photocopy of an arrest warrant rather than an original warrant of deposit, and notes that he remains imprisoned despite direct instructions from the Minister of Justice, Laurent Esso, for his release.

Separately, Parfait Mbvoum, president of the Front Républicain, has been held at Kondengui Central Prison for thirteen months following his arrest on October 24, 2025. Mbvoum, a supporter of Issa Tchiroma Bakary, was apprehended during a period of unrest following the contested 2025 presidential election. Legal representatives state that Mbvoum has not been presented to an investigating judge, a violation of the Cameroonian Code of Criminal Procedure which mandates that detention should be the exception and that suspects must be brought before a judge upon their first appearance.
