Cameroon launches campaign to formalize artisanal gold mining
The Cameroonian Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development (MINMIDT) has launched a government campaign to formalize artisanal gold mining in the East region, specifically in Ketté. The initiative, which is also expected to extend to the Adamaoua region, aims to transition mining activities from the informal sector into a regulated legal framework.
Led by MINMIDT Inspector General Philippe Nyetam, the campaign focuses on educating miners about legal requirements, including the formation of Economic Interest Groups (GIE), obtaining miner cards, and following specific rules for the commercialization and exportation of gold. The government intends for this formalization to improve the traceability of precious metals, secure public revenue, and ensure that local communities benefit more directly from mining income while reducing fraudulent exports.
