Cameroon political leaders address civic engagement and AI misinformation

In Cameroon, political leaders are addressing civic engagement and misinformation ahead of upcoming elections. Denis Emilien Atangana, president of the Front des démocrates camerounais (FDC), has called on citizens to actively participate in public life, specifically through local municipalities and the National Assembly, to drive national change.

Atangana, an electoral expert, also noted that based on recent decrees regarding the extension of mandates for municipal counselors and deputies, the next elections could potentially be held in early 2027. He has advocated for opposition unity regarding the timing of these legislative and municipal polls.

Separately, Jean-Michel Nintcheu, president of the Front pour le changement du Cameroun (FCC), has debunked a circulated document claiming that Maurice Kamto had joined his party. Nintcheu identified the document as a deepfake generated by artificial intelligence and urged the public not to credit the false communiqué, which had been widely shared on social media.
