Cameroon President Paul Biya Collapses During Unity Day Celebration

On 20 May 2025, during the national Unity Day festivities at the presidential palace in Yaoundé, 93‑year‑old President Paul Biya fell after a sudden malaise. The incident occurred shortly after the official program had proceeded with a military parade, anthem and speeches. Security forces from the Direction of Presidential Security quickly cordoned off the area, and television broadcasts were cut as officials ordered silence under threat of sanctions. Biya was moved to the palace’s medical unit, where doctors attended to him. First Lady Chantal Biya later urged guests to continue the celebration as if nothing had happened.

Authorities later reported that Biya’s health was being closely monitored. While some officials described the episode as a simple “fatigue episode,” other sources suggested a more serious condition, noting discussions of a possible medical evacuation to Switzerland that had been considered days earlier. The incident has heightened public and international interest in the president’s health, given his 43‑year tenure.

The event underscores concerns about succession and stability in Cameroon, where the president’s long rule has been a cornerstone of the political system.
