Cameroon President Paul Biya faces criticism over frequent stays in Switzerland

Cameroon President Paul Biya is facing significant social media criticism following his recent return to the country after extended stays in Switzerland. The 93-year-old leader, who has held power since 1982, has been mocked by citizens who characterize his return as an official state visit to his own nation.

Reports indicate that Biya spent nearly two months abroad between June 7 and August 20, 2024, following similar absences in previous years. Data from the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project previously estimated that Biya had spent approximately 4.5 years abroad on private visits during his presidency, a figure expected to have increased since 2018.

The president’s frequent absences coincide with domestic challenges, including widespread unemployment and a secessionist conflict entering its tenth year. While critics question his presence and health, the Cameroonian government has defended his travels, asserting that he is capable of managing the country remotely despite the vice presidency remaining vacant.
