Cameroon’s 93‑year‑old President Paul Biya, in power for 44 years, left Yaoundé on 7 June 2026 for a private European visit with his wife. As of early August 2026 he has been absent for 56 days, sparking widespread speculation about his health and the functioning of the state.

The government, through spokesperson René Emmanuel Sadi, has repeatedly asserted that Biya is alive, working from abroad or on annual leave, and that there is no vacancy of power. No official medical diagnosis has been released.
