Cameroon shows progress in prosperity and fiscal transparency

Cameroon has shown improvements in several governance and prosperity metrics, according to recent international reports. In the 2026 Legatum Prosperity Index, the country rose to 133rd place out of 161 nations, up from 147th in 2023 and 151st in 2022. Despite this upward trend, the country remains significantly behind regional neighbor Gabon, which holds 93rd place, highlighting a gap between Cameroon's economic weight in Central Africa and its overall prosperity indicators.

Additionally, the U.S. Department of State’s 2026 Fiscal Transparency Report noted significant progress in Cameroon’s budgetary transparency. The report highlighted that the Cameroonian government has made strides by publishing its executive budget proposals and year-end reports online within reasonable timeframes. While the report noted that actual revenues and expenditures did not always align closely with the adopted budget, it commended the timely availability of documents and the publication of information regarding debt obligations.
