Cameroon tribunal annuls Vision 4 suspension by media regulator

A legal dispute between the Cameroonian media outlet Vision 4 and the National Communication Council (CNC) has highlighted significant jurisdictional limits regarding media regulation. Following a decision by the CNC on September 29 to suspend Vision 4's broadcasting for one month, the Administrative Tribunal of Yaoundé annulled the sanctions on October 1.

The tribunal ruled that the CNC's authority is limited to regulating content, such as suspending specific journalists or programs. The court determined that the CNC does not possess the legal power to revoke broadcasting licenses or shut down an entire national station, as that authority resides with the Ministry of Communication (MINCOM).

The crisis, which involved sanctions against figures such as Martial Owona and Boney Philippe, has been interpreted by some as a political matter. Observers noted that the resolution of the standoff appeared to involve high-level political influence, with the media group L’Anecdote expressing gratitude to President Paul Biya following the developments.
