Camila Pitanga Cast as Samba Legend Clara Nunes in New Brazilian Biopic
Actress Camila Pitanga, 49, has been confirmed to portray iconic samba singer Clara Nunes in the forthcoming Brazilian film “Clara”. The biopic will trace Nunes’ rise in 1970s Rio de Janeiro, highlighting how she broke gender barriers in a male‑dominated music industry and promoted Afro‑Brazilian cultural traditions. Nunes, the first Brazilian woman to sell over 100,000 copies of a single album, died in 1983 from complications following a minor surgery.
The project is produced by Matizar Filmes in partnership with Pitanga’s own Paraguassu company, co‑produced by H2O Productions and distributed by H2O Films. The screenplay was written by Janaína Tokitaka and Flavia Vieira. Pitanga described the role as “a divine mission, one of the greatest challenges of my life,” emphasizing her intent to convey both the voice and the struggle of the celebrated artist.
