Andy Díaz wins European triple jump gold with Italian record

At the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, Andy Díaz Hernández secured the gold medal in the triple jump with a massive leap of 18.15 meters. This performance set a new Italian outdoor record and ranks as the fourth-best jump in history, placing him just 14 centimeters behind the world record held by Jonathan Edwards.

Pedro Pichardo took the silver medal with a jump of 17.76 meters. The Portuguese athlete, an Olympic champion, noted that he stopped after his initial successful attempt due to ankle discomfort. The bronze medal was won by fellow Italian Andrea Dallavalle, who recorded a jump of 17.37 meters.

Beyond the triple jump, the championships saw significant activity from Portuguese athletes. Joana Pontes set a new national record in the race walk marathon, while the women's 4x100m relay team also established a national record to qualify for the final. In the men's race walk, Massimo Stano won the marathon with a continental record, contributing to a strong showing for the Italian delegation.
