Camino de Invierno sees 16% growth in pilgrims

The Camino de Invierno is celebrating ten years of official recognition with a significant increase in popularity. According to data released by Galicia's Director of Tourism, Xosé Merelles, more than 2,400 pilgrims have received the Compostela certificate via this route so far in 2026, representing a 16% growth.

While still considered a minority route compared to others, the Camino de Invierno shows a consistent upward trend, having only seen declines during the 2020 pandemic and the summer wildfires of the previous year. The route is also seeing increased international interest, with 39% of those completing the route this year originating from abroad.

Across all Camino de Santiago routes, total pilgrim numbers have risen by 7% in 2026, with over 467,000 people receiving the Compostela. International travelers make up 60% of total pilgrims, with the United States, Italy, Portugal, Germany, and the United Kingdom identified as primary countries of origin.
