Camino de Santiago faces disinformation and shifting tourist patterns

The Camino de Santiago is facing various challenges, ranging from organized disinformation campaigns to shifting tourist behaviors. Recent reports indicate a smear campaign targeting the pilgrimage routes, utilizing social media platforms like Facebook to spread uncoordinated claims regarding insecurity, robberies, and poor local reception. Some of these efforts, including a website created in Nigeria, have used sensationalized accounts of past incidents to discourage travelers.

Separately, data regarding pilgrim behavior in Santiago de Compostela suggests that the length of stay is driven more by social connections than by local tourism offerings. According to a survey by the guide Santiago.es, the most common duration for pilgrims is two nights. The study found that travelers tend to depart once the companions they met during their journey leave, rather than due to a lack of activities or sites to visit in the city.
