Camino de Santiago pilgrimage reaches record numbers

The Camino de Santiago pilgrimage routes in northwest Spain are experiencing significant growth, with registered pilgrims exceeding 500,000 in 2025. This surge in popularity has led to a proliferation of literature documenting the various paths and personal experiences associated with the journey.

Several major routes are highlighted within the pilgrimage network, which includes over 200 officially recognized paths and an 80,000-kilometer European network. The Camino Francés remains the most popular, starting in St. Jean-Pied-de-Port and crossing the Pyrenees. Other notable routes include the Camino Portugués, which offers coastal or inland options starting from Lisbon or Porto, the Camino del Norte which follows the northern Spanish coastline, and the shorter Camino Primitivo starting in Oviedo.

Beyond the physical journey, the pilgrimage is often described as a search for meaning or a way to disconnect from the pressures of modern performance-oriented culture.
