Camisea natural gas availability halved in ten years
The availability of natural gas from the Camisea field in Peru has decreased by half over the last decade. This resource is critical to the nation, generating 40% of the country's electricity and supplying households, industries, and vehicles.
Former Minister of Energy and Mines Carlos Herrera Descalzi noted that Peru has not discovered a significant new deposit in over 40 years since Camisea was found in 1985. He warned that replacing gas with diesel for electricity generation could increase costs tenfold, as a megawatt hour costs approximately $30 with gas compared to up to $300 with diesel.
Economic impacts are significant: Macroconsult reports that households using natural gas for cooking and heating can save over S/2,000 annually, while taxis can save more than S/20,600 compared to other fuels. Currently, only 110 of the 1,893 districts in Peru have access to natural gas.
Minister of Energy and Mines Guillermo Shinno has proposed a plan to ensure all 24 regions have gas distribution within five years through increased exploration in Camisea and the development of Candamo.
