Camp East Montana detention center sees two violent incidents

Tensions have escalated at Camp East Montana, a large migrant detention center located at Fort Bliss, following two violent incidents in early September.

On September 7, approximately 130 detainees engaged in a disturbance, throwing objects, overturning furniture, and disabling surveillance cameras. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the participants caused “significant damage” to the facilities and property. While Texas Department of Public Safety helicopters were deployed to assist in regaining control, DHS stated that all detainees were accounted for and no injuries were reported during this specific Sunday protest. Local activists in El Paso suggested the unrest was driven by poor detention conditions and frustration over the length of time detainees have been in custody, with some demanding immediate deportation.

This event followed a separate incident on September 1, where detainees reportedly attacked security personnel. During that encounter, workers were kicked, hit, and struck with electronic tablets. The individuals identified in the September 1 attack were removed from their dormitory immediately.
