Camp Mystic owners file for bankruptcy following fatal 2025 flood
The owners of Camp Mystic, a private Christian girls' camp in Texas, have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization. The filing, made on September 25, proposes auctioning off the camp's 749-acre riverfront property and other assets.
The bankruptcy follows a devastating flood on July 4, 2025, when the Guadalupe River surged over its banks. The flood was part of a larger event that killed at least 136 people along the river.
The camp's owners expressed a preference for a buyer who would maintain the property's historic mission, though the plan does not mandate that the new owner continue operating it as a camp. The Eastland family, who has owned the camp for decades, had previously attempted to reopen this summer but faced significant opposition from victims' families, state lawmakers, and ongoing legal investigations.
State police investigators have recently sought search warrants for the electronic communications of the camp's owners as part of an investigation into potential manslaughter, negligent homicide, and child abandonment.
