Campania dog adoptions decline amid shelter uncertainty

In the Campania region of Italy, dog adoption remains a significant social phenomenon, though recent data indicates a decline. According to Ministry of Health figures from 2022, 4,250 dogs were adopted in the region, representing a 23% decrease from the 5,526 adoptions recorded in 2021.

During 2022, there were 13,730 total entries into animal facilities in Campania, including 8,833 into sanitary kennels and 4,897 into shelter kennels. While adoptions help free up space for rescued animals, the system relies heavily on associations and volunteers.

In Naples, the future of several shelters has become uncertain. Specifically, the La Fenice shelter in Ponticelli, which houses 35 dogs, and the Buonocore kennel in Agnano, which houses 75 dogs, are facing precarious situations regarding their continued operation.
