Campania environmental issues focus on Durazzano quarry and Airola fire
Environmental issues have recently dominated discussions in the Valle di Suessola and surrounding areas. In Santa Maria a Vico, Mayor Andrea Pirozzi and the Valle di Suessola Environmental Committee attended a hearing with the VII Environment Commission of the Campania Regional Council regarding the Durazzano quarry.
During the hearing, officials expressed concerns regarding the environmental, health, and administrative aspects of the extractive activity. The Mayor requested that the Region annul existing administrative acts and conduct a verification of all authorizations issued since 2009. While the Commission expressed willingness to maintain dialogue and consider a permanent monitoring table, no concrete measures to suspend or annul the quarry's activities were implemented.
Additionally, monitoring continues following the fire that broke out in the Airola industrial area on August 31. Arpac reported on September 14 that monitoring of airborne dioxins remains an ongoing process.
