Campania healthcare: Calls to protect maternity wards in disadvantaged zones

Regional councilor Gennaro Oliviero has called on Campania President Roberto Fico to address the closure of maternity wards in Sessa Aurunca, Piedimonte Matese, and Sapri. This follows a TAR Campania ruling that rejected appeals against the regional government's 2025 plan to close these birth centers.

Oliviero, representing the ‘A Testa Alta’ group, argued that the political responsibility now lies with the regional administration to uphold existing legislation. He specifically cited Regional Law no. 11 of July 22, 2025, which designates these three areas as disadvantaged zones regarding healthcare service accessibility due to geographic and connectivity challenges.

He urged the new regional administration to re-examine previous deliberations and utilize the legislative tools available to ensure healthcare services remain accessible in these specific territories.
