Campania opposition protests waste accumulation at Taverna del Re

Center-right regional councilors in Campania organized a surprise flashmob at the Taverna del Re waste site in Giugliano to protest regional inaction regarding accumulated waste. Led by opposition leader Gennaro Sangiuliano, the delegation included representatives from Forza Italia and Fratelli d’Italia.

The protesters highlighted that approximately one million tons of ecoballs (processed waste) remain at the site. They noted that a government agreement had originally stipulated the site should have been closed by 2019, but the project has since stalled. The opposition criticized the long-standing left-wing administration of the Campania Region, citing recent fires at the site as a threat to local public health.

As a symbolic gesture, Sangiuliano announced he would present a non-polluting, scented ecoball to President Roberto Fico to represent the perceived failure of the current political coalition.
