Campania public heritage faces privatization risks
The protection of historical, social, and healthcare heritage in Campania is facing a crisis as large-scale public structures face potential privatization.
In Naples, the Ex Convitto Pontano alla Conocchia, a 17th-century monumental complex, was recently sold at a judicial auction for 1.2 million euros. This figure is significantly lower than the court-appointed expert valuation of 17 million euros. Local citizens and associations have filed an urgent request with the Ministry of Culture to exercise the state's right of pre-emption to prevent the property from becoming private and to instead use it for social and urban regeneration purposes.
Similarly, on the Amalfi Coast, the former San Michele hospital in Pogerola remains an abandoned structure that the local health authority (ASL) intends to sell, highlighting a pattern of neglect regarding large public assets in the region.
