Campania Region implements stricter measures to combat Sarno river pollution

The Campania Region is preparing a new bill to introduce harsher administrative sanctions and intensified inspections targeting companies that illegally discharge industrial waste into the Sarno river basin and surrounding lands. President Roberto Fico announced these measures during a parliamentary inquiry hearing, specifically highlighting the food preservation sector as a primary target for increased vigilance.

The initiative aims to protect environmental remediation efforts from being undermined by illegal waste disposal. This legislative push is part of a broader environmental recovery program supported by a four-year framework agreement valued at approximately 407 million euros, intended for land reclamation and hydraulic risk mitigation.

Regional authorities aim to complete the closure of the final ten sewage outlets directly connected to the river by the spring of 2027. Officials noted that while progress has been made—citing improved water quality in areas like Castellammare di Stabia—the region remains committed to a zero-tolerance policy toward companies attempting to reduce costs through illicit waste management.
