Campania Region proposes boundary change for Erchie hamlet
A legislative proposal has been introduced in the Campania Regional Council to transfer the hamlet of Erchie from the municipality of Maiori to the municipality of Cetara. The initiative, signed by ten regional councilors, aims to resolve administrative and logistical challenges faced by the approximately 140 residents of the area.
Proponents argue that Erchie is geographically closer to Cetara, located about 1.8 kilometers away, compared to 7.9 kilometers from Maiori. This proximity has already led to a functional integration with Cetara, where residents access essential services including primary schooling, medical assistance, ambulance services, and school transportation. Additionally, the Cetara-based entity 'Cetara Servizi e Sviluppo' currently manages beach cleaning and sanitation in the hamlet.
The proposal also addresses administrative paradoxes regarding the port of Cetara, much of which falls under Maiori's jurisdiction despite being accessed via land from Cetara. This arrangement requires Cetara to seek constant authorization from Maiori for maintenance works.
A consultative referendum for Erchie residents is expected in 2027 to finalize the decision. While the administration of Maiori has expressed opposition to the transfer, Mayor Gianpiero Romano stated that the community's requests deserve attention and listening.
