Campeche ex-official released on bond amid embezzlement probe

Carlos Alberto Medina Hernández, the former director of the Social Communication Unit for the Government of Campeche, has been released on provisional liberty after paying a 200,000 peso bond. He faces judicial proceedings for the alleged embezzlement of more than 36 million pesos during the administration of former governor Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas.

The investigation by the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in Combating Corruption of Campeche (FECCCAM) suggests that unjustified payments were made from the communication unit to various companies lacking operational substance. One such transaction reportedly involved a local television station owned by an associate of the former governor.

As part of his release, Medina Hernández must adhere to several precautionary measures, including periodic mandatory check-ins, a prohibition on leaving the state of Campeche without judicial authorization, and restrictions on contacting victims or witnesses.

Separately, penitentiary authorities denied social media reports alleging that Medina Hernández was assaulted by other inmates while detained at the San Francisco Kobén prison. Officials stated that medical evaluations and inspections by the Human Rights Commission confirmed his physical integrity.
