Campeche fishermen demand fulfillment of life insurance campaign promise

Deep-sea fishermen in Campeche, led by Alejandro Espinosa Echeverría, protested in front of the Government Palace to demand that Governor Layda Sansores San Román fulfill a campaign promise regarding life insurance benefits.

Currently, the insurance provides 100,000 pesos for deaths at sea and 50,000 pesos for deaths on land. The protesters are demanding a uniform increase to 500,000 pesos for all cases. Additionally, they are seeking to double the annual economic support from 7,000 to 15,000 pesos per person.

During the demonstration, protesters held talks with the Director of Governance, Pablo Sánchez, and requested the presence of Edward Ceballos Alejandre, head of the State Institute of Fishing and Aquaculture (Inpesca). A ten-person committee agreed to meet with Alejandre at the institute's facilities. Espinosa Echeverría also noted that many in the sector lack complementary support such as scholarships and requested that financial aid be distributed in a single payment rather than three installments to avoid banking complications.
