Campeche fishermen protest for higher subsidies and against evictions
Fishermen in Campeche, Mexico, are staging protests to demand increased government subsidies and to denounce administrative irregularities. Approximately 360 deep-sea fishermen gathered at the Government Palace to demand that support payments for fishing bans and low catch periods be increased from 7,500 to 15,000 pesos. They are also seeking an increase in life insurance coverage from 50,000 to 500,000 pesos.
In addition to financial demands, fishing organizations are reporting several grievances against state and federal authorities. These include the unnotified demolition of dwellings and structures on the malecón, which representatives claim violated legal notification procedures. Leaders have filed appeals with federal and human rights agencies in Mexico City to investigate the actions of Semarnat and Profepa.
Furthermore, fishermen have raised concerns regarding the transparency of fuel subsidies, alleging that resources intended for cooperatives in areas like Champotón and Seybaplaya are being diverted to official government vehicles instead.
