Campeche Mayor Biby Rabelo faces embezzlement investigation

Biby Rabelo de la Torre, the mayor of Campeche, appeared before a judge for an initial hearing regarding an investigation into alleged embezzlement (peculado). The investigation involves several current and former municipal officials, including the municipal treasury syndic and directors of the SMAPAC water management agency.

Rabelo de la Torre stated that her appearance was to comply with a judicial notification and noted that the investigation files were only recently provided to her during the proceedings. She maintained that no substantive determination was made during the hearing. The mayor suggested that the legal proceedings against her and other public servants might be politically motivated, citing the upcoming 2027 electoral process.
