Campeche officials face scrutiny over electoral laws and crime data

Authorities in Campeche are facing scrutiny regarding legal limitations in electoral oversight and discrepancies in crime statistics.

José Ignacio Coronel Cruz, head of the Electoral Crimes Vice-Prosecutor's Office, stated that current state legislation prevents the prosecution of alleged early campaign activities. He noted that until the formal electoral process is declared by the State Electoral Institute, activities cannot be legally classified as campaigns, pre-campaigns, or candidacies. This legal gap complicates the investigation of political promotion occurring outside official timelines.

Separately, federal deputy Rubén Moreira has challenged the administration of Governor Layda Sansores over rising insecurity and conflicting homicide data. Moreira pointed out a discrepancy between the National Public Security System, which recorded 389 homicides between 2021 and 2025, and INEGI, which recorded 446. He also highlighted a significant rise in public perception of insecurity, noting that 69 percent of the state's population now feels unsafe.
