Campeche Police Leak Images of Two Bodies Found in Escárcega, Prompting Legal Criticism
On Sunday, the Secretariat of Protection and Citizen Security (SPSC) in Campeche, headed by Marcela Muñoz Martínez, released graphic images and details of two dead bodies discovered in the municipality of Escárcega before the state prosecutor’s forensic team could process the scene. The premature disclosure contaminated the chain of custody and was described as a political stunt aimed at gaining visibility with the state government.
Officials suspect the remains may belong to a couple reported missing on June 29, though scientific identification has not been confirmed. Criminal law experts warned that the public leak undermines victims' rights, hampers investigations and gives perpetrators time to destroy evidence. The local population expressed strong indignation, accusing authorities of turning a tragedy into a propaganda tool and jeopardizing access to justice.
