Campeche reports rise in conjunctivitis cases amid high temperatures

Health authorities in Campeche, Mexico, are monitoring a rise in conjunctivitis cases, which have reached 4,976 infections so far in 2026. This figure already exceeds the total number of cases recorded throughout the entire year of 2025 by 444 cases.

State Health Secretary Orlando Rivadeneyra stated that while cases are increasing, there is no epidemiological alert or ‘red zone’ status. The rise is attributed to high temperatures and the return of students to classrooms. Officials emphasize that the situation remains under control and within expected seasonal parameters.

Medical professionals, including Luis Alberto Cuevas Fernández, president of the Colegio de Médicos de Campeche, have warned that improper treatment of these viral, bacterial, or allergic infections could lead to complications such as ulcers or vision loss. They recommend strict hygiene, specifically frequent handwashing, and advise parents not to send children to school if they exhibit symptoms like redness or itching.
