Campeche Tourism Secretary admits lack of sector experience

Adda Rubí Solís Peniche, the Secretary of Tourism for Campeche, admitted during a state congress hearing on August 14, 2026, that she lacks prior experience in the tourism sector. During the accountability session, Solís Peniche became emotional and wept while responding to questions from legislators regarding the state's tourism performance and various administration projects under Governor Layda Sansores.

Solís Peniche disclosed that she had expressed doubts to Governor Sansores when the position was initially offered. Legislators questioned the official on the loss of approximately 50,000 visitors over the last three years and the utility of specific investments, such as a 10-million-peso ship-shaped structure installed on the Campeche Malecón.

Critics and legislators, including Mónica Fernández Montúfar, have characterized the management of the department as ineffective, citing poor results for local hoteliers and restaurateurs. The controversy has sparked debates regarding the professional qualifications of officials appointed to the Sansores administration.
