Portonovo campsite opening sparks environmental debate

The new Campeggio Conero, a campsite slated to open in Portonovo near Ancona, received municipal approval on 8 June 2026 and regional authorization from the Conero Park. It will accommodate up to 516 guests with 104 pitches and 66 parking spaces.

Most local tourism operators welcome the project, citing increased visitor flow, additional tax revenue for the municipality and a boost to the regional economy. Entrepreneur Guido Guidi, however, warns that the area’s natural character must be protected. He urges a “slow, quality tourism” model, proposes small frequent shuttles, and recommends limiting car access to staff and people with disabilities, arguing that the bay should remain a “rare gem” rather than a densely built zone.
