Camphor use for muscle pain relief and its mechanisms

Camphor is a common ingredient in ointments and balms used to alleviate mild muscle discomfort caused by tension or physical exertion. When applied topically, the substance interacts with skin receptors to create sensations of heat or cold, which can temporarily alter the perception of pain.

Physiotherapist Fernanda Almeida, coordinator of the Physiotherapy course at Faculdade Anhanguera, explains that this effect is primarily symptomatic. While it may reduce the sensation of discomfort, it does not necessarily treat the underlying cause of the muscle pain.

Users are advised to follow manufacturer instructions regarding concentration, as higher levels increase the risk of skin irritation. Professional medical evaluation is recommended if pain is intense, recurrent, or persists for multiple days, as issues like inflammation or injuries may require specific medical treatments.
