Campi Flegrei: WWF Oasi degli Astroni closed due to seismic damage

The WWF Oasi degli Astroni, a significant green area within the Campi Flegrei region, has announced an indefinite closure following a safety inspection. The decision follows seismic activity recorded on July 31.

Technical assessments described the situation as ‘very critical,’ noting widespread damage to trails. Notably, the ‘Gennarino’ tree, a symbolic landmark of the oasis, has suffered a branch collapse, which has also compromised pedestrian paths. The WWF stated that the closure is necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and staff until maintenance and safety interventions can be completed.

The shutdown is expected to impact local employment, including nature guides, educators, and maintenance personnel, as well as the broader local economy that relies on tourism and educational visits to the crater.
