Campina Grande prepares for new VLT rail project
Campina Grande is preparing for a new era of rail transport with the development of a Light Rail Vehicle (VLT) project. Scheduled for completion in the second half of 2027, the system is planned to span 14.8 kilometers and include 13 stations, serving areas such as the Aluísio Campos Complex, Açude Velho, and regions near public universities.
This modern project marks a significant shift from the city's historical railway, which arrived in 1907 via the Great Western company. Historically, the rail network was a catalyst for economic growth, transforming Campina Grande into a major hub for the cotton trade by connecting the interior to the port of Recife. While the original line eventually transitioned to freight-only service before declining, the new VLT project aims to modernize urban mobility for the city.
