Campina Grande undergoes significant urban expansion at 162

Campina Grande is celebrating its 162nd anniversary amid significant urban expansion. Data from the Secretariat of Works and the Secretariat of Planning indicate a substantial increase in construction activity. Between 2021 and 2025, the issuance of construction permits rose by approximately 221%, increasing from 539 to 1,729 documents.

This growth is primarily horizontal, characterized by new allotments and residential developments rather than vertical high-rise construction. The West Zone, specifically the neighborhoods of Três Irmãs, Serrotão, and Malvinas, has emerged as the main vector for this expansion over the last five years. In the last four years, the city has officialized 254 new streets and registered 629 new postal codes.

The rapid expansion presents challenges for urban mobility and traffic management. Researchers note that the current road infrastructure often struggles to accommodate the increasing number of private vehicles and the lack of dedicated lanes for different modes of transport. As horizontal growth reaches the municipality's geographic limits, the new Master Plan aims to prioritize vertical growth and concentrate residents in the central area and established neighborhoods.
