Campinas celebrates first Dia do Evangélico municipal holiday

Campinas is celebrating its first 'Dia do Evangélico' (Evangelical Day) as a municipal holiday this Wednesday, August 12. Established by Municipal Law No. 16.785/2025 and sanctioned by Mayor Dário Saadi, this marks the city's first new municipal holiday in 23 years.

While the law institutes the annual holiday, Mayor Saadi applied a partial veto to remove provisions requiring public funding or official state support for religious celebrations. This decision was made to uphold the constitutional principle of state secularism.

The holiday has resulted in the suspension of administrative services in municipal agencies, autarchies, and public foundations. However, essential services including emergency health units (such as Mário Gatti and Ouro Verde hospitals), SAMU, the Municipal Guard, and Civil Defense remain operational on 24-hour shifts. Public parks, the Municipal Market, and local street markets are scheduled to remain open, though garbage collection and certain administrative offices like Procon will follow modified schedules.
